FORWARD
APEA/AFT is a democratic organization dedicated to improving working conditions, salaries and benefits for public employees and to protecting their rights on the job.
In becoming an Employee Representative, you have assumed a role which is vital to the success of APEA/AFT in meeting the needs of its members -- your needs and those of your co-workers.
You will have a special relationship with the people you represent. Research shows that the attitude of most workers toward their Association depends on their attitude toward their Employee Representative.
This is especially true here in Alaska. Because our membership is so widely dispersed, many members do not have an opportunity to talk with the President, Board of Directors, Business Manager or other elected officials and paid staff.
To members on the job you are APEA/AFT. If the employees you represent feel that you are intelligent, aggressive, fair and well-informed, they will feel the same way about APEA/AFT.
Serving as an Employee Representative is a challenge and a responsibility. You will be the vital communication link between the membership and APEA/AFT's paid staff. You will be a source of essential information for the members concerning the services offered by the Association. You will be advising your co-workers concerning their rights, assisting them in dealing with management under sometimes stressful conditions, investigating complaints and initiating grievances.
This Handbook has been developed to provide
you with information you will need to be knowledgeable and confident in
performing each of these tasks. It pertains to all bargaining units represented
by APEA/AFT.
